- After more than 70 hearings in five days, students managed to beat more than 32 teams from 12 countries, being the only Peruvian university to be part of the three winning teams.
Students of the Law School of the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC) participated, from April 18 to 22, in the XIV edition of the International Competition of Arbitration and Commercial Law – MOOT Madrid 2022, where they reached the final round and won second place. The program is present in various international competitions in order to enhance the arbitration skills of its students and reaffirm the solid legal training provided by the university.
Moot Madrid is an international competition of Arbitration and Commercial Law whose objective is to enhance the training of law students in the knowledge and use of legal texts related to the Uniform Law of International Trade and its resolution through International Commercial Arbitration.
This edition was made up of more than 70 audiences, where students had the opportunity to demonstrate their skills such as synthesis capacity, clarity in presentations, responsibility, perseverance and teamwork. They managed to stand out among the more than 32 teams from 12 countries around the world, being UPC the only Peruvian university to be part of the winning teams.
With this achievement, the Law students will reach the final round of the Moot Madrid for the third consecutive time, thanks to the shared effort of the coaches and speakers. At the same time, the leadership of the faculty member and head coach of the team, Elvira Martínez Coco, who has been named leader in the list “Peru 2022 Best Arbitrators,” of the French firm Leaders League should be highlighted. She is accompanied by faculty member and UPC graduate, Ricardo Ampuero, as well as graduates Mitzy Longa and Hernán Castro.
“I am very proud of the achievement of our Law students, which results from the perseverance and high preparation they have had during the classes to enhance their arbitration skills. All this has led us to be among the first places in the Moot Madrid for the third consecutive time. We will continue to participate in high-level competitions that provide unique experiences and add value to our students,” said Beatriz Miranda, director of the UPC Law School.
The UPC team was formed by the following students: Thalía Jiménez, Evelyn Silva, Sebastián Balvin, Vania Reyes, Luciana Huilca, Alvaro Chávez, Valeria López, André Ramirez and Camila Salazar. Specially outstanding was the participation of the student Thalía Gladys Jiménez, who received the Honorable Mention for best individual speaker in general rounds “Eric.E. Bergsten Award” and the Honorable Mention for best speaker representing three different companies in the arbitration process “Hydra Award”.
It is worth mentioning that, with this achievement, Law students have reached the final round for the sixth time in various international arbitration competitions. This demonstrates that UPC not only offers a solid legal education, but also provides a globalized vision to its students.
